Papaya infected with “papaya ringspot virus” shows symptoms such as yellowing and reduction in size of new leaves, which later develop brown spots or mottling. Longitudinal oily streaks may form on the petioles and apical regions of stems. Plants may become stunted and less likely to flower and fruit. If the virus infects the fruit after it has formed, the fruit may become deformed and develop concentric rings.
“Papaya ringspot virus” is typically transmitted to leaves by pests such as aphids and thrips. It is generally a challenging virus to treat, often relying on the plant’s natural resistance. What we can do is reduce the chances of spreading the virus to other trees or infecting new leaves.
Recommendations are as follows:
- Trim off leaves severely infected with the virus (those with many yellow spots).
- Apply Baba Compost-based Fertilizer (approximately 3kg) around the perimeter of the papaya tree every two weeks for two consecutive applications.
- Spray Mr Ganick Aphid Buster Concentrate + Mr Ganick Virus Preventer to control pests and reduce the spread of the virus. Apply once a week (2ml Mr Ganick Aphid Buster Concentrate + 3ml Mr Ganick Virus Preventer + 1L water).
- Continue this treatment for 3-4 weeks. Also, ensure regular fertilization to provide the plant with sufficient nutrients for recovery.
**How to determine if papaya ringspot disease is under control? —— Observe for the absence of symptoms of papaya ringspot virus on newly emerging leaves.
