The Story of Baba:

Malaysia has a harmonious cultural history. The Baba is a unique Malaysian identity that comes from the cultural fusion of two extraordinary groups: the Malays and the Chinese.

A well-known and beloved part of Malaysian history tells the story of a Chinese princess from the famous Ming Dynasty, Hang Li Po, who arrived in Malacca in the 15th century to marry the legendary Sultan Mansor Shah. With her came an entourage of 500 Chinese officials and merchants, who eventually settled and intermarried with local Malay women. This union gave rise to a new culture known as the Baba & Nyonya.

As distinguished descendants, the Baba represent a unique blend of two cultures, bringing together the pragmatism and diligence of the Chinese with the romanticism and harmonious lifestyle of the Malays. This blend is celebrated in every aspect—from furniture, costumes, and cuisine to dialects and ways of life—even today.
